March 15, 2011 - 3:01 pm
Las Vegas police were fired upon as they tried to pull over a reckless driver in the northeast valley Tuesday .
Police spokeswoman Marcus Martin said an officer saw a speeding car run a red light at 2:43 p.m. at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue.
An officer started pursuit but broke off the chase because of high speed, Martin said. Then a second officer began pursuit.
Officers laid down tire spikes and performed a precision intervention technique at Nellis near Lake Mead Boulevard. During the maneuver, a patrol car bumps the rear of a car to make it spin out and stop.
Martin said the man shot at an officer at least once while he was driving.
Police arrested him near Nellis and Cartier Avenue, about three miles north of where the car was first seen.
Martin said the driver could face felony charges, including attempted murder of a police officer and evading an officer.
Martin said one officer and the driver suffered minor injuries as the man resisted arrest.
