Man who tied up toddlers to go watch NBA game is sentenced

A 22-year-old man jailed almost two years ago for tying up children he was baby-sitting so he could go to a bar and watch a basketball game might be released soon.

Jonathan Weaver was sentenced to two to six years in prison on two counts of child abuse with use of a deadly weapon.

Judge James Bixler handed down the sentence Tuesday but gave Weaver credit for 713 days already served. As of Wednesday, he was 16 days short of being eligible for parole.

Weaver pleaded guilty in January to the two felony counts. Four other charges were dropped as part of the deal.

Weaver was arrested June 10, 2009, on attempted murder charges after Las Vegas police found his girlfriend’s 1- and 2-year-old boys tied up in their car seats in an apartment complex garage.

A neighbor alerted police after hearing the children cry in the garage inside the Augusta Apartments on Spencer Street south of Pyle Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the boys hooded, bound and restrained in their car seats. Weaver is not the father of the boys.

According to police, Weaver was upset he had to baby-sit the boys. After tying them up, he went to a nearby bar and watched the Los Angeles Lakers play the Orlando Magic in an NBA Finals game.

The boys, who were in the garage for about two hours, suffered minor injuries. Their mother, who does not live with Weaver, was at night school and was not charged in connection with the incident.
