Man shot by Las Vegas police Tuesday dies

A man shot by Las Vegas police Tuesday night has died.

The 35-year-old man was shot after he broke into a home in the 9000 block of Crystal Rock Circle. He was wearing only underwear and brandishing a knife.

Police said a resident came home about 5 p.m. to find the man sitting on his couch with a large knife.

SWAT units tried to negotiate with the man but were unable to draw him out. Police used several tactics before the shooting, including dogs, Tasers and rubber bullets. But the man could not be subdued.

Officers ultimately entered the back of the house to try to arrest the man, who was also carrying a hammer. The man ran away, but encountered more officers entering the front of the house. Two officers fired their weapons, police said. The man was hit several times. He was taken to University Medical Center. Police initially said his condition was stable, but the man died either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

The officers were placed on routine paid administrative leave pending a review of the incident.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release the man’s name after his family is notified.
