Man killed in home invasion identified

A man who was shot and killed Saturday after Las Vegas police said he broke into a southeast valley apartment was identified Monday by the Clark County coroner’s office as 46-year-old Ted Barry Berkowitz.

Berkowitz died from a gunshot wound to his torso fired by the apartment resident. The coroner’s office said Berkowitz was found on a stoop outside the apartment’s front door.

Police said four men between the ages of 30 and 50 invaded a home about 2 p.m. at Las Palomas Apartments, 4040 Boulder Highway, near Desert Inn Road.

The resident and at least one of the four suspects had guns and a brief gun battle ensued, police said.

Three of the suspects fled the scene. No one else was injured by the gunfire, police said.

Police initially said the apartment’s resident was cooperative, and they hadn’t made a decision on whether to recommend charges against him.

Police spokesman Marcus Martin said Monday afternoon that one of the suspects, whose identity was not released, was arrested at a hospital. He declined additional comment on the investigation, which is ongoing.
