Man dies after being struck, pinned against tree, by an SUV

A 50-year-old man died Saturday afternoon when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle and pinned against a tree.

The driver of the vehicle was turning east onto Sunset Road from the I-215 off ramp near Paradise Road when he lost control and struck a man near a bus stop around 4 p.m.

Las Vegas police Lt. Steve Herpolsheimer said the victim was conscious and talking while rescue crews worked to free him. He died about an hour later at Sunrise Hospital.

"That pinching was the only thing keeping him alive," Herpolsheimer said.

Police said the vehicle was traveling too fast for the wet road conditions. Both factors caused the crash, Herpolsheimer added.

The intersection of Paradise and Sunset roads was closed for several hours as police investigated. It is unknown whether the driver will face any charges.
