Las Vegas police officer arrested on charges of domestic violence

A Las Vegas police officer was arrested Sunday night after police said he choked his ex-wife and fired a gunshot into the ceiling of his northwest valley home.
According to his Las Vegas arrest report, officer James Anthony Segura, 40, was in bed with his ex-wife about 9 p.m. at their home at 5605 Island Breeze Court, near Ann Road and Jones Boulevard, when he received a call from someone. His ex-wife thought it was another woman.
An argument began and soon turned physical, the report said. The ex-wife told police Segura grabbed her by the throat with both hands until she couldn’t breathe and slammed her head against the wall multiple times.
The couple’s adult daughter and a family friend witnessed the attack. They pulled Segura from the woman, the report said. She fled the bedroom but later returned and continued the argument.
She told police Segura called her a whore and ordered her to leave the house. He then took a handgun from the top of a television and fired a shot into the ceiling, the report said.
When officers arrived, the woman had gone outside and was trying to leave the area. She had "visible red marks on her neck" and was bleeding from her hand, the police report said.
Segura told detectives he never touched his ex-wife but admitted firing a gunshot into the ceiling.
Inside the house, police recovered two handguns. There were several holes in the bathroom walls, which the woman told police Segura had made when he punched the walls in anger. There also was a bullet hole in the ceiling.
Segura was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Sunday on charges of domestic violence involving strangulation, as well as firing a gun into an occupied structure.
The couple had been married 20 years and were divorced in February, the report said.
Segura was hired by the Metropolitan Police Department in 2004 and is assigned as a patrol officer with Bolden Area Command. His employment status was not immediately known.
