Las Vegas officer suspended in domestic dispute
A Las Vegas police officer accused of choking his ex-wife and firing a gun in his home has been suspended, officials said Thursday.
Officer James Anthony Segura, 40, was suspended with pay after the Sunday night arrest, but that status could be very temporary, police said.
If the district attorney’s office charges Segura with the felonies he is accused of — domestic violence involving strangulation and firing a gun into a structure — he will be suspended without pay, per Metropolitan Police Department policy, officials said.
Segura is expected to be charged, but the process could take until next week.
According to his arrest report, Segura was in bed with his ex-wife about 9 p.m. Sunday at their home at 5605 Island Breeze Court, near Ann Road and Jones Boulevard, when she accused him of talking to another woman on a cellphone.
An argument began and soon turned physical, the report said.
The ex-wife told police Segura grabbed her by the throat with both hands until she couldn’t breathe and slammed her head against the wall multiple times.
The couple’s adult daughter and a family friend witnessed the attack and attempted to help the woman.
Later during the dispute, Segura took a handgun from the top of a television and fired a shot into the ceiling, the report said.
When officers arrived, the woman had gone outside and was trying to leave the area.
She had “visible red marks on her neck” and was bleeding from her hand, the police report said.
Segura told detectives he never touched his ex-wife but admitted firing a gunshot into the ceiling.
Inside the house, police recovered two handguns.
There were several holes in the bathroom walls, which the woman told police Segura had made when he punched the walls in anger. There also was a bullet hole in the ceiling.
Segura was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Sunday.
The couple had been married 20 years, but were divorced in February, the report said.
Segura was hired by the Metropolitan Police Department in 2004 and is assigned as a patrol officer with the Bolden Area Command.
