Las Vegas man gets prison in ’08 stabbing death

A 29-year-old Las Vegas man was sentenced Monday to 15 to 40 years in prison for a 2008 New Year’s Eve slaying.

Christian O. Paredes in July pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon for the slaying of 46-year-old Dennis Borero .

During the sentencing hearing before District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure, Paredes apologized for what he had done and said Borero was his friend, according to an attorney who was in the courtroom.

Paredes confessed to investigators that he was high on methamphetamine when he stabbed Borero at least seven times in the neck at a home near Lamb Boulevard and Boulder Highway, according to his arrest report.

Paredes said that Borero had threatened him and his 2-year-old daughter because Paredes had stolen a knife, the report said.

Paredes admitted to police that neither he nor Borero knew where the child lived at the time.

Witnesses later told authorities that Borero never threatened Paredes.

Borero, nicknamed “Rasta Man,” worked as a carpet cleaner and was married and the father of three children, according to his obituary.
