Judge delays unsealing Adelson security lawsuit

A federal judge said he needs more information before deciding whether to unseal documents in a case filed by members of an elite security team that protects the family of Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson.

“The presumption is, as it should be, that things should not be filed under seal,” U.S. District Judge Philip Pro said Thursday.

Documents in the case remain sealed, but Pro suggested that most of them would be made public soon.

Nine current and former members of the casino company’s Executive Protection Team, which keeps watch over the Adelson family 24 hours a day, have sued Las Vegas Sands and its lead Strip resort, The Venetian, to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime they claim they are owed.

Last month, Las Vegas Sands lawyers successfully asked for permission to file a “motion to seal” under seal.

The request said, “Defendants’ motion to seal and supporting declarations and exhibits must not be made public because the security of individuals being protected would be severely compromised if those documents were filed in open court.” Pro later ordered the plaintiffs to file their opposition under seal.

At a hearing on Thursday, Pro asked the parties to try to reach an agreement on the types of information in the case that should remain confidential. He asked the parties to file their proposal, under seal, by next Thursday.
