Inmate dies in hospice care

A man who was recently moved from a Nevada prison to a Las Vegas hospice center died on Saturday, corrections department officials say.

Charles Smith was 53 when he was hospitalized late in April for what officials called a chronic medical condition. He was moved from hospital care to hospice care at the end of May.

Smith was serving a 3-to-8 year sentence for attempted burglary and attempting to possess a credit card a credit card without its holder’s consent. His inmate information indicated he may have tried to pass as his younger brother.

Smith had been incarcerated since the end of last year. His corrections department record shows he served a previous sentence and had parole hearings in 2006 and 2007.

An autopsy has not yet been completed.
