Henderson police shoot man armed with two guns
A Las Vegas man armed with two handguns was shot by a Henderson police officer about 9:30 a.m. Friday, police said.
The incident forced a brief lockdown at nearby Coronado High School.
Josiyah Meno, 28, was wounded while standing near the entrance of an office building in which his estranged wife works.
“They did everything they could to get this thing to end peacefully,” Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said. “This was all in the suspect’s control.”
The incident occurred at 2779 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, where several medical offices are located. Paul said Meno’s wife recently filed for a temporary protective order against Meno, but it had not been served.
Police said the woman, who was not identified, called them twice this month: once to claim her husband had battered her and then again Wednesday to report that he had left threatening messages on her cellphone.
Paul said four officers responded to the scene. He said they spent about eight minutes pleading with the man to drop his weapons, but he raised one of the two guns in the officers’ direction, prompting one of them to shoot him. Paul said the officer fired a single round.
Detectives found a shell casing believed to be from one of the man’s weapons, and they think he and the officer fired at about the same time.
Police said Meno has prior convictions in Nevada for robbery, burglary and burglary with a deadly weapon.
Meno was taken by ambulance to the trauma unit at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, and a hospital spokeswoman would not release his condition.
Paul said Meno will be booked by proxy on charges of attempted murder of a police officer.
Paul said all four officers have been placed on paid administrative leave and will be identified 48 hours after the shooting, in keeping with department policy.
