Ex-teacher gets probation for sexual misconduct

A former Chaparral High School mariachi teacher was sentenced to three years probation Wednesday for having sexual conduct with a student.

Adam R. Romo, 27, pleaded guilty in July to one felony count of sexual conduct with a pupil. A second count was dropped as part of plea deal with prosecutors.

The male victim was 17 years old at the time.

Romo taught a full-time mariachi program for 180 students at Chaparral, at 3850 Annie Oakley Drive, near U.S. Highway 95 and Flamingo Road.

State law says a person who is 21 or older and in position of authority cannot engage in sexual conduct with a student who is 16 or 17 years of age and who is attending the school at which the person is employed.

Romo’s employment with the Clark County School District ended June 24, a spokesman said.
