Authorities take records in HOA raid
Authorities from the Nevada attorney general’s office, with help from Las Vegas police, on Thursday raided a homeowner association accused of fraud and embezzlement.
Officers served warrants at Paradise Spa HOA at 9457 Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Interstate 15.
A spokeswoman for Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto declined comment, but the raid is not believed to be part of an ongoing federal investigation of fraud allegations involving homeowner associations across the Las Vegas Valley.
Bill O’Donnell, a former state senator and homeowner in the Paradise Spa HOA, watched as authorities carried out boxes of documents. He said the criminal case involves allegations that an HOA official took $2.2 million from the other members after a fire two years ago.
O’Donnell’s homes were not damaged in the fire, but he said an elderly resident lost her home and has not been paid any insurance money. The home remains in disarray.
The insurance money is alleged to have gone to Aaron Yashoufar, a Los Angeles man who owns a majority of the buildings in the HOA, O’Donnell said.
O’Donnell said a lawsuit has been filed against Yashoufar. He, and the other residents, hope officials clean up the HOA.
“They need to get these people’s money back,” he said. “There needs to be compensation.”
