Arrest report details shooting involving off-duty school police officer

An off-duty Clark County School District Police officer on Saturday fired six shots, striking two men, after one of the men reportedly pointed a gun at him.

The officer-involved shooting was detailed in an arrest report for Mark Anthony Perez, 34, a suspect in an earlier shooting who is alleged to have pointed a gun at CCSD officer John Evans.

Evans, 29, was in a civilian vehicle stopped at the intersection of Sahara and Eastern avenues when he saw Perez firing a gun at an unidentified man in a Jiffy Lube parking lot, according to the Las Vegas police report released Wednesday.

Perez ran across Sahara to an El Pollo Loco parking lot and tried to get into the back seat of a Kia sedan. Evans followed, identified himself as an officer and told Perez to drop his gun, the report said.

Evans said Perez pointed a gun at him as Perez was climbing into the sedan. Evans then fired six shots from his Glock handgun at Perez, who did not fire.

Perez was struck in his “lower extremities” by Evans’ gunfire and suffered minor injuries, the report said. Alfonso Corbala, a passenger in the back seat of the sedan, was struck by Evans’ gunfire. He suffered minor injuries, the report said.

Detectives interviewed the two men at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where they had driven for treatment. Perez claimed no knowledge of the earlier shooting at Jiffy Lube.

Corbala initially said a gang member called “Huero” had been the shooter in the Jiffy Lube parking lot but later admitted it was Perez, the report said.

Perez was arrested for assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked at the Clark County jail. Corbala was not arrested.

It’s unclear from the report what prompted the shooting at the Jiffy Lube or who the intended target was. That man, as well as the Kia sedan driver who took Perez and Corbala to the hospital, have not been located.

Evans has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
