$100K bail for Connecticut police officer arrested in fatal crash
A Connecticut police officer facing DUI charges in connection with a Las Vegas crash that killed a fellow officer early Friday was ordered held on $100,000 bail, court records show.
Robert Ferraro, 34, appeared in court Saturday morning in connection with the crash at Spring Mountain Road and Decatur Boulevard, according to Las Vegas Justice Court online records.
Ferraro faces felony charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm, court records show.
Acting New Haven Police Chief Renee Dominguez told reporters Friday morning in a media briefing that Ferraro was an officer for the department.
The crash happened just before 4 a.m., when a Rolls-Royce Cullinan entered the intersection at a “high rate of speed,” the Metropolitan Police Department said. Ferraro lost control of the car, striking a Ford Mustang, utility poles, landscaping and a fire hydrant, police said.
The Rolls-Royce flipped onto its roof, throwing a man from the passenger seat. The man later died at University Medical Center.
Dominguez identified the deceased officer as Joshua Castellano, a seven-year veteran of the department. Dominguez was his first supervisor when he patrolled a small neighborhood in New Haven at the beginning of his career. She said the children loved him and after receiving news of his death, a woman from that neighborhood texted Dominguez how upset she was.
“He worked very hard and was very passionate and he gave me a lot of great year,” she told reporters at the scene.
Dominguez said Ferraro was placed on administrative leave while the department investigates.
Police said Ferraro, along with two other men and two women also in the SUV at the time of the crash, suffered minor injuries.
Dominguez confirmed the other two men in the car were also New Haven officers.
Ferraro remained in the Clark County Detention Center on Saturday and is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, court records show.
