Passenger traffic at Las Vegas airport increases in February

Passenger traffic took off for a second consecutive month at McCarran International Airport in February because of increases in domestic and international travel, the Clark County Department of Aviation reported Wednesday.

More than 3.56 million airline passengers flew through the nation’s eighth-busiest airport last month, a 4 percent jump from February 2017.

Of that, 3.24 million boarded or arrived on domestic flights in Las Vegas last month, a 3.9 percent increase from a year earlier. International flights arriving or departing McCarran carried 252,942 travelers, up 2.9 percent from a year earlier.

Year to date, 7.34 million passengers have flown in or out of the airport during the first two months of 2018, a 3.3 percent increase from the same period last year.

If the increases continue through the end of 2018, then McCarran International could potentially break the record set last year with 48.5 million airline passengers.

Domestic passenger traffic into McCarran was bolstered by increases from the airport’s five busiest carriers: Southwest, American, Delta, Spirit and United, according to the aviation department. Traffic increases were also reported by Alaska, Allegiant and Frontier.

Among international airlines, Air Canada reported a 5.7 percent increase in traffic with 66,928 passengers last month, while Canadian carrier WestJet saw a 5.5 percent increase with 75,376 passengers.

Virgin Atlantic Airways reported a 5.8 percent decline in traffic with 9,728 passengers. British Airways carried 22,514 passengers in February, a 1.8 percent decrease from last year.

Korean Air was up 4.4 percent with 9,178 passengers. Chinese carrier Hainan reported a 45.4 percent jump in traffic with 5,233 passengers.

Mexican carrier Interjet reported an 11.4 percent decline to 10,387 passengers in February, while Aeromexico had a 29.2 percent drop to 10,461 passengers. Volaris reported an 8.8 percent drop in February to 12,367 passengers.
