Salt Lake City starts airport expansion

SALT LAKE CITY — Construction has begun on a $1.8 billion project to remake terminals at Salt Lake City International Airport.

The new design will trade in the hub’s three terminals for one big terminal.

Officials on Friday said the project is tricky because it’s set to go up right next to the existing airport, which will operate as normal during construction.

The new terminal is scheduled to open in 2022, with 72 gates instead of the current 86.

Part of the new facility is set to open in 2019.

The new design has three levels, with one exclusively for customs and international travel. Another will hold a lounge, conference and meeting space.
