McCarran continues to post monthly ‘bests’ since 2007

More than 4.1 million airline passengers flew through McCarran International Airport last month, marking the airport’s best July performance since 2007, the Clark County Department of Aviation will report Thursday.

The nation’s eighth-busiest airport saw an overall 2.6 percent increase in departing and arriving passengers over July 2015, buoyed by slight gains in domestic and international flights, airport officials said.

More than 3.7 million airline passengers boarded or arrived on domestic flights last month, a 2.6 percent jump from a year earlier. International flights arriving or departing McCarran carried 311,584 travelers in July, a 3.3 percent increase from a year earlier.

Air Canada saw a 27.4 percent increase in traffic with 68,845 passengers, while the Canadian carrier WestJet was down 14.5 percent with 74,820 passengers.

British Airways carried 29,019 passengers in July, a 16.2 percent leap from last year. Swiss carrier Edelweiss Air reported a 32 percent increase in traffic to 8,107 passengers last month.

Mexican carrier Interjet reported a 76 percent jump to 10,289 passengers in July, while Aeromexico saw a 10.4 percent increase to 27,636 passengers. Volaris reported 23,434 passengers last month, an 8.6 percent decline compared to the same period last year.

Year-over-year figures show that more than 27.4 million airline passengers traveled through Las Vegas during the first seven months of 2016, a 5.2 percent increase from the same period last year.

Three of the airport’s top five carriers continued to report growth. No. 5 Spirit Airlines continues to show the largest jump in traffic, up 15.9 percent with 298,843 passengers in July. American Airlines, the No. 2 carrier at McCarran, reported a 5.5 percent increase, with 446,762 passengers last month.

United Airlines, the fourth-largest carrier serving McCarran, reported a relatively flat 0.8 percent increase in traffic with 277,154 passengers in July.

Market leader Southwest reported 1.6 million passengers last month, a 2.7 percent dip from last year. Third-place Delta reported a 4.2 percent decline from July 2015 with 333,723 passengers last month.
