BLM releases report on coal-fired plant

The Bureau of Land Management on Friday released a draft environmental impact statement on a proposed 750-megawatt, $1.4 billion coal-fired power plant northwest of Mesquite.

Sithe Global Power, a company 80 percent owned by the Blackstone Group, plans to build the Toquop Energy plant on federal land in Lincoln County.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has promised to use his power to stop coal-fired projects like Toquop because of concerns that carbon dioxide emissions from coal plants lead to global warming. Sithe Senior Vice President Thomas Johns said the new plant would produce less carbon dioxide and other forms of pollution than old coal plants that will be retired.

Sithe hopes to start construction late next year and start operation by 2013.

Forklift topples pole, causes power outage

A forklift being used on a construction site at Wynn Las Vegas knocked down a power pole, causing a 50-minute outage Friday afternoon, Nevada Power Co. spokesman Adam Grant said.

The outage, at 2:20 p.m., didn’t affect any Strip casinos, Grant said.

KLAS-TV, Channel 8, at 3228 Channel 8 Drive and the Greek Isles at 305 Convention Center Drive were affected.

American raises fares on some U.S. flights

American Airlines raised many domestic fares by $5 each way but left prices unchanged on routes where it competes with low-cost carriers.

The Thursday night increase affected both advance-purchase tickets favored by vacationers and pricier last-minute tickets aimed at business travelers.

Tim Smith, a spokesman for the airline owned by Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., said the fare increase was needed to cover high fuel costs.

Cell-phone-number e-mail bogus, FTC says

An e-mail warning consumers that cell phone numbers will soon be released to telemarketers is making the rounds again, and government officials have a key detail they’d like to add: it’s totally bogus.

The e-mails say that recipients must add their cell phone numbers to the federal government’s Do Not Call registry by a certain deadline in order to avoid being deluged by telemarketing calls.

But there is no deadline, cell phone numbers aren’t about to be released to telemarketers and it is already illegal for most telemarketers to call mobile phones, the Federal Trade Commission said Friday.

Treasury prices sell off after retail sales news

Treasury prices sold off Friday after economists saw a retail sales report as evidence that the Federal Reserve has no reason to cut rates this month.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note opened at 100.84 before the reports and closed at 100.50, down 0.34 points on the session. Its closing yield was 4.70 percent, up from 4.69 percent on Thursday. Prices and yields move in opposite directions.
