Culinary votes to raise dues in event of strike

Culinary Workers Local 226 members voted overwhelmingly Monday to raise dues by $25 in the event of a strike this year against Strip and downtown resorts.

About 92 percent of the Culinary members who participated in the vote supported the increase.

Members also approved a permanent $4 increase to dues in 2014 and in 2015. The permanent increases are to support new organizing. It is the first time since 2006 that such a vote has taken place.

Contracts for hotel and restaurant employees with Strip and downtown resorts expire in two weeks.

The union and representatives from MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corp. have held two negotiating session and are continuing to have discussions toward a new five-year agreement.

Contracts covering workers with downtown Las Vegas casinos and at the Tropicana, Riviera, LVH, Stratosphere and Treasure Island, are also expiring.
