Clarion slated for implosion in February

The Clarion off the Strip is scheduled to be imploded next month in the early morning hours.

Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said Thursday that the implosion will take place on Feb. 10 between 2-3 a.m.

Located at 305 Convention Center Drive, the Clarion originally opened as the Royal Inn in 1970. It was closed and reopened multiple times in its 44-year history, and changed ownership at least five times through 2009.

Also known as the Royal Americana, Paddlewheel, Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel and Greek Isles in its lifetime, the hotel became the property of its creditors, in a partnership with the Clarion hotel chain, in 2009.

The hotel, featuring 200 guest rooms, was the only Clarion in the United States to offer gaming.

Kulin said the implosion will cause road closures, but he had no information on which roads nor for how long they would be closed.

It will be the first Las Vegas hotel implosion since November 2007 when the New Frontier was taken down.
