Black Gaming will pay to settle claims of age discrimination

Black Gaming agreed to pay $60,000 to settle age discrimination claims filed by two employees at its CasaBlanca hotel-casino in Mesquite.

The company also agreed to standard terms in cases brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, including the appointment of an equal employment compliance officer, training the staff and monitoring compliance. The term of the consent decree runs three years.

Al Allison and Martha Ray were both sales managers at the property in December 2007 when they said they were told their positions were being eliminated. They were both offered other jobs at what they contend were lower wages and benefits. They turned down the jobs.

A few weeks later, the sales manager posts were filled by younger people. At the time, Allison was 67 and Ray was 55. That led them to file age discrimination complaints in February 2008.

The process led to both a complaint and a proposed settlement being filed in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas on Tuesday calling for an even split of the money between Ray and Allison. Black Gaming neither confirmed nor denied guilt in any of the documents.
