Atlantic City casinos closing today

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Atlantic City’s 11 casinos are shutting down as Hurricane Irene moves toward the resort city and the rest of New Jersey.

Officials say the 11 plan to close by 8 p.m. today. Workers there were told not to report to duty for shifts scheduled to start after 4 p.m. A spokesman for Boyd Gaming Corp., which operates the Borgata, said the resort would close at 6 p.m.

Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment operates four of Atlantic City’s casinos.

The city’s casinos have shut down only twice before, in 1985 for Hurricane Gloria and in 2006 because of a state government shutdown.
