All Gulf Coast casinos ordered to close

The Mississippi Gaming Commission ordered all Gulf Coast casinos to close Tuesday because of Hurricane Isaac.

The 12 casinos, all located on or near the Gulf of Mexico, were told to have all customers out the door by Tuesday morning. Casino staffs faced an afternoon deadline to secure the properties.

Two Biloxi, Miss., casinos, the Palace and the MGM Resorts International-owned Beau Rivage, closed early Tuesday morning. Two casinos in neighboring Hancock County, the Silver Slipper and Hollywood, closed Monday because they are in low-lying areas where officials ordered a mandatory evacuation.

“The commission is continually monitoring the weather conditions and will issue orders to reopen the properties when conditions are safe for casino employees and patrons,” Gaming Commission spokesman Rob Vickers said in a statement.

Casinos in the New Orleans area closed Monday in anticipation of the hurricane.
