Super Bowl means more than just wagering to Las Vegas

Deutsche Bank gaming analyst Bill Lerner looked beyond the $81.5 million gamblers wagered on Super Bowl XLIII. According to the Gaming Control Board, the figure was 11.5 percent less than what was wagered a year ago and the lowest betting total since 2004.

Lerner was more concerned that tourism officials had estimated visitation for Super Bowl weekend was going to be off 1 percent and the nongaming spending per visitor was down 6.5 percent.

"Sports wagers make up just 1 percent of Nevada gaming revenue, relatively insignificant when also considering nongaming revenue," Lerner said. "The event brings additional visitors to the Strip resorts, generating incremental gaming and nongaming revenue."
