New York Times opposes casino expansion

The New York Times editorialized on July 4th that state politicians should quit looking at casino gaming as a way to fill budget shortfalls.

"Politicians all over see casinos as magic revenue chests that will help them avoid painful spending cuts, escape the trap of no-tax pledges and make budget gaps vanish," the editorial writers stated.

New York is looking at two different casino ideas. One would bring 4,500 video lottery terminals to New York City’s Aqueduct Race Track. A second proposal has two New York counties fighting for a casino operated by the Shinnecock Indian Tribe.

"Casinos are a magnet for tainted money and promote addiction, crime and other ills," according to the New York Times.
