Park Place Infiniti opens showroom for Adoption Exchange

Park Place Infiniti is helping find adoptive families for Nevada’s waiting children by displaying The Adoption Exchange “Heart Gallery” in its showroom this summer.

The Heart Gallery is a collection of artful photos featuring local children who are waiting to be adopted by a safe and loving family. The display will be at Park Place Infiniti, 5555 W. Sahara Ave., through July 21.

“When you see these children’s faces you can’t help but be moved to help find a family to embrace them,” Park Place Infiniti General Manager Joe Tortomasi said. “Park Place Infiniti has a long history of supporting children’s charities and The Adoption Exchange is one that is near and dear to my heart. I invite prospective parents to visit us to see the Heart Gallery, especially if adoption is something they are considering.”

The Adoption Exchange is a nonprofit organization that serves as the connection between the 547 Nevada children who wait in foster care and families seeking to adopt. Park Place Infiniti’s support over the past year has helped 76 children waiting in foster care unite with pre-adoptive families.

Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame inducts 20th class

The Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame celebrated its 20th year Saturday by inducting its four newest members while drawing a near-capacity crowd of about 800 to Orleans Arena.

The initial event in 1997 was spearheaded by a group of Findlay Automotive employees, including company President Cliff Findlay and dealership General Manager Rich Abajian, the founder of the Hall of Fame who died Feb. 9.

As general manager of Findlay Toyota, Abajian brought the Hall of Fame display to the second floor of the dealership in the Valley Automall where it remains.

It was Abajian’s goal to take the Hall of Fame to another level recognizing the city’s top athletes while also supporting youth athletics. The Hall of Fame and Findlay Automotive Group partnered to create the Rich Abajian Leadership Scholarships, which were presented during the ceremonies.

Awarded scholarships were Christian Montenegro of Desert Oasis High School, Kasdyn Rafie of Palo Verde High, Nathalie Martinez of Valley High and Christian Ong of Clark High.

The newest inductees into the hall included professional baseball player Marty Cordova, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, the 1997-98 UNLV national championship golf team and UNLV booster, businessman and former Nevada Athletic Commission Chairman Sig Rogich. With the latest class, the hall now has 93 members.

Just as important, though, is the fact that the Hall of Fame has continued generating funds for youth athletics during the past two decades. Proceeds from the event will be donated to organizations committed to the support and enhancement of Southern Nevada youth through active participation in programs designed to promote leadership, values and character through sports.

Findlay Chevrolet, Silverton combine for car show

The inaugural Summer Fun Classic Car Show, presented by Findlay Chevrolet and the Silverton, was a huge success June 25.

With about 100 registered entries, the show drew a strong crowd of automotive enthusiasts while generating funds for the Nevada Burn Foundation.

Presented by the Las Vegas Cruisin’ Association at the Silverton, the event had a long list of prizes and awards including an upcoming Garth Brooks concert that includes an overnight stay at the Silverton and full transportation.

According to dealership community relations manager Reuben Banks, plans for the next event in 2017 are already being made with the Silverton and the Las Vegas Cruising Association,

“We’re going to move the event to the month of May,” said Banks. “In addition, we’re connecting with classic car clubs in Nevada, Utah and Arizona to make this show even bigger.

Art Kam, a director with Las Vegas Cruising Association, said the group was pleased with the turnout.

“We have been promoting car shows since the 1980s,” he said. “Our objective is to keep the interest in classic cars including all makes and models.”
