Friendly Ford service adviser urges car owners to take care of their vehicles
The sudden emergence of heat will undoubtedly play a role in the importance of proper maintenance of vehicles, according to Friendly Ford service adviser Paul Deems.
An 11-year veteran of the dealership’s service department and a 35-year employee of the car business, Deems said maintenance is more important now than ever before.
“Cooling system failures are the biggest concern, especially when they haven’t been serviced according to manufacturer’s specifications,” said the 53-year-old native of Virginia. “That’s not the only concern, but it’s a big one, for sure.”
Leaks and corrosion are big issues and so are cooling fans during the summer months, Deems said.
“Once you start having problems with these components, you’ll have overheating problems and your car will fail,” he said. “As the engine begins to heat up, the car engine will get so hot that it simply shuts off.”
Deems advised the drivers follow the manufacturers’ recommendations.
“In this climate, we must deal with heat, cold and dusty conditions,” Deems said. “With the dust, air filters are also key. However, people also often pay no attention to the air filters. Most manufacturers recommend changing them every 15,000 miles, or as needed in extreme conditions.”
If not changed, a dirty air filter can lead to reduced fuel economy and the sudden appearance of check engine lights.
“Check engine lights can create real concern,” Deems said. “It comes on for a reason and it’s important to get the vehicle checked.”
Still another factor during the hot summer months is the condition of a vehicle’s tires.
“The heat on the pavement can reach very high levels,” Deems said. “Considering the long distances that are often traveled in the desert during the heat, the last thing anyone wants is a tire failure.
“Proper air pressure is key, and so are checkups to make sure tires are wearing correctly,” Deems said. “These inspections can be conducted during oil basic changes.”
Yet another key inspection needs to be done on the automobile battery, which can also be drained by the heat.
Friendly Ford has a 1970 Ford pickup that is still running strong thanks to the continued service that is conducted on the vehicle.
“The truck runs perfectly because it has been serviced,” Deems said, “I think there was one time when it wouldn’t start, but other than that, it has been flawless and it’s proof that vehicles will last if people service them. I always tell people that if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you.”
