LeBron says he feels confident because he’s ‘the best player in the world’

If LeBron James’ secret motivation for winning an NBA title this season is to prove that he — not Warriors point guard Steph Curry — is the true Most Valuable Player, he’s stating his case in convincing fashion.

Should the Cavaliers fail to erase a 3-2 series deficit to Golden State, James — averaging 36.6 points, 12.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game in the NBA Finals — might become the only player from a losing team to earn NBA Finals MVP honors not named Jerry West, who accomplished the feat in 1969.

Either way, James considers himself the greatest. He said so after Sunday’s Game 5 loss to the Warriors.

“I feel confident because I’m the best player in the world,” James said. “It’s that simple.”

It was the second time in the series that James boasted about his ability. After scoring 44 points in a Game 1 loss, he rejected the notion that part of Golden State’s game plan was to let him score while forcing his teammates to step up.

“You don’t let me have 40,” James said. “I go get 40.”

We can’t argue with the content of James’ boasts, only the timing as they’ve both come following losses.
