Condit overwhelms Alves in return after torn ACL

Welterweight contender Carlos Condit eased back into competition in his return from a torn ACL with a relatively even first round against Thiago Alves.

Once the second round began, Condit went all out and proved too much for Alves to handle in the main event of an Ultimate Fighting Championship card in Goiania, Brazil on Saturday night.

“After the feeling-out process, I just started to think about the different things we worked on in this camp and this first thing I threw that we had worked on, really worked,” Condit said.

Condit landed a crushing left hand early in the second round that appeared to break the nose of Alves.

The round continued with Condit battering Alves right up to the bell. After a quick examination, the ringside physician decided to call an end to the bout before the third round could begin.

“I felt I could keep fighting at least for another round, but the doctor stopped it and I have to respect that,” Alves said.

Charles Oliveira submitted Nik Lentz 1:10 into the third and final round with a guillotine choke. It was the featherweight’s fourth straight victory.

Also, Alex Oliveira submitted welterweight Nik Lentz with a rear naked choke late in the first round.
