Driver accused in hit and run arrested at casino
A 32-year-old Las Vegas man who fled after he is alleged to have struck and killed a pedestrian with his pickup in North Las Vegas on Saturday is behind bars facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence involving a death and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic accident, North Las Vegas police said.
Jose Santiago was driving an older-model Chevrolet pickup west on Lake Mead Boulevard near Pecos Road when he hit a man who was crossing the street about 9 p.m., police said.
The pedestrian, who wasn’t identified, died at the scene.
Santiago fled to the Bighorn Casino on Lake Mead about a block from the incident, police said.
Witnesses helped police locate the truck, and Santiago was arrested at the casino.
It was the second fatal hit-and-run incident in North Las Vegas in as many days.
On Friday, a 4-year-old girl died after she, her 8-year-old brother and their mother were struck by a speeding 1994 Honda Civic driven by 18-year-old Christian Cortes on Civic Center Drive near Lake Mead, police said.
Police said Cortes lost control of the Honda and drove onto the sidewalk.
Cortes, a North Las Vegas resident, ran away after the crash but turned himself in to police about an hour later.
He was booked into the North Las Vegas Detention Center on multiple felony charges.
On Sunday afternoon, the woman who was struck by the Honda, Yolanda Shirley, was released from University Medical Center, but her son remained at the hospital recovering from injuries that include two broken legs, relatives said.
