Operation Nora II results in 33 arrests in two-day sweep

By Thursday evening, 33 people had been arrested and Las Vegas police hoped that double that number would be in custody by early this morning when Operation Sweep Nora II was expected to an end.

The two-day sweep that began Wednesday involved rounding up suspects with outstanding warrants who live in the southeast valley, specifically the area bordered by Maryland Parkway on the east, Paradise Road on the west, Sahara Avenue on the north and Flamingo Road on the south.

Lt. Jack Owen said that of the 33 arrests, six were for felony warrants and 22 stemmed from misdemeanor charges.

The warrants were issued for myriad crimes including robbery, burglary, weapons and drug charges.

Police also confiscated drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine, Owen said. Several vehicles were also impounded. By Thursday evening, no weapons had been recovered.

The joint operation, which took two months to plan, was carried out by 40 teams of two people each.

The teams included officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Division of Parole and Probation as well as U.S. marshals.

This is the second year police have conducted the sweep. In 2006, more than 100 people were arrested.

Owen said there were no reports of injuries to police or suspects. A couple of suspects attempted to run, but were quickly arrested, he said.

SWAT officers were on standby in case any violent situations developed, he said.

"The community can feel good knowing that these people are off the streets."
