Rebels golf 17th in West

The UNLV women’s golf team finished 17th at the NCAA West Regional in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, failing to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Rebels shot 61-over-par 954 for the tournament.

Oklahoma State and Stanford tied for first at 22-over 874. The top eight teams in the 21-team field advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Oklahoma State’s Pernilla Lindberg won medalist honors and was the only player to finish below par, shooting 7-under 206 on the par-71 Entrada at Snow Canyon course.

Freshman Natasha Krishna led UNLV at 13-over 226, tying for 28th.

• WOMEN’S TENNIS — UNLV was swept 4-0 by No. 18 Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Berkeley, Calif.

The 46th-ranked Rebels (19-8) dropped the first two doubles matches to lose the first point, then lost their first three singles matches against the Sun Devils (13-9), who advanced to play California today.

UNLV came into the match having won the doubles point in 23 of 26 outings this season.

The Rebels’ Kristina Nedeltcheva, Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfelde lost their singles matches in straight sets.

The remaining singles matches were halted when Arizona State clinched the victory.

• BASEBALL — UNLV allowed six runs in the first two innings and lost 6-5 to New Mexico in a Mountain West Conference game in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Rebels (18-34, 7-14 MWC) had the tying run on base in the ninth but could not complete the comeback against the Lobos (25-25, 11-10), who swept the three-game series.

UNLV starter Kevin Skogley (2-5) allowed six runs — five earned — on 10 hits in five innings to take the loss.

• SOFTBALL — UNLV capitalized on five Utah errors to gain an 8-3 Mountain West victory over the Utes in Salt Lake City.

The Rebels (37-27, 12-8 MWC) scored four unearned runs in the fifth, aided by three errors by Utah (25-26-1, 5-14).

Alyssia De La Torre and Kendall Fearn each drove in two runs for UNLV. Christie Robinson (15-5) allowed two runs in four innings to gain the win.

• TRACK AND FIELD — UNLV freshman Charlotte Browning won the 1,500-meter run on the final day of the MWC Outdoor Championships in San Diego.

Browning crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 24.16 seconds.

UNLV finished last in the nine-team field with 18 points. Brigham Young won the title with 195 points, and Texas Christian was second with 152.

Browning, freshman shot putter Aja Evans and sophomore sprinter Meia Tezeno qualified for the NCAA West Regional, May 24 to 26 in Eugene, Ore.
