Women’s golf still 17th in West Regional

The UNLV women’s golf team remained 17th after the second round of the NCAA West Regional on Friday in St. George, Utah.

The Rebels are at 61-over-par 629 after shooting 26-over 310. Oklahoma State leads at 13-over 581, followed by Stanford at 587. The top six teams will advance to the NCAA Tournament, which is May 22 to 25 at Daytona Beach, Fla.

UNLV senior Seema Sadekar (6-over 148) is tied for 18th entering today’s final round. Freshman Natasha Krishna is tied for 23rd at 149.

Oklahoma State’s Pernilla Lindberg has the individual lead at 6-under 136.

BASEBALL — UNLV blew a three-run lead and lost its second straight to New Mexico, 7-4 in a Mountain West Conference game in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Rebels (18-33, 7-13 MWC) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Xavier Scruggs’ home run, his team-leading seventh of the season, and led 4-1 after Keith Smith’s RBI single in the fifth.

But the Lobos (24-25, 10-10) scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh to finish the scoring. Jordan Pacheco had the biggest hit, a two-run homer in the sixth that broke a 4-4 tie.

Scruggs, Smith and Calvin Beamon each had two hits.

Reliever Marc Baca (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings.

SOFTBALL — Kendall Fearn’s three-run homer with one out capped a four-run sixth inning and gave UNLV a 6-5 MWC victory over Utah in Salt Lake City.

Jaci Hull also homered for the Rebels (36-27, 11-8), a two-run shot in the third that cut their deficit to 4-2. Hull went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Utah (25-25-1, 5-13) pounded UNLV starter Stephanie Bregante for four runs on four hits in the first. Kara Foster’s two-out, two-run homer capped the scoring and ended the day for Bregante, who was relieved by Christie Robinson.

Robinson finished the game, allowing one run on seven hits to improve to 14-5.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD — Junior Monique Humphries had a mark of 158 feet, 5 inches to finish sixth in the hammer throw at the MWC outdoor championships in San Diego.

Sophomore Meia Tezeno ran 13.81 to qualify for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Her time was the second fastest.

After eight events, Brigham Young leads with 101 points, followed by Colorado State with 64. Humphries’ finish gave UNLV three points.

MEN’S TENNIS — Ninth-ranked UCLA defeated UNLV 4-0 in the first round of the men’s NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles.

The Rebels, in the tournament for the first time since 1999, finished 13-14.
