Skyhawks prevail in Sunrise duel

As high school baseball tournaments progress, scores often balloon as teams exhaust their pitching staffs.

But Silverado and Coronado got to show off their depth on the mound Thursday in the Sunrise Regional tournament.

The Skyhawks (23-11) prevailed in a pitchers’ duel, edging Coronado 2-1 to move into today’s Sunrise title game.

Silverado will play Green Valley (24-10) at 7 p.m. at Basic for the regional title and a berth in next week’s state tournament at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

“Justin (Rainville) gave us a great start, and their guy (Cory Ginther) was double tough,” Silverado coach Brian Whitaker said. “That was just a great pitched high school game all around.”

Rainville allowed one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one before giving way to Chase Bradford after allowing a solo homer to Carmen Romano and a single to Jordan Blanchard.

Bradford allowed a hit to Josh Bryan to put runners on the corners, but a botched squeeze play helped Silverado escape. Pinch runner Ryan McIntyre broke from third base, but Tim Arthur didn’t attempt to bunt, and McIntyre was caught in a rundown for the second out.

Coronado (23-10) had the tying run in scoring position again in the seventh, but Bradford got the final two outs to end the game.

“That’s really why I wanted him out there, because if anybody has the mound presence and composure to handle the yelling and screaming and the intensity of the moment, it’s him,” Whitaker said. “He’s been there time and time again, so that worked out great.”

Both Silverado runs came in the third, when Jordan Keegan hit a one-out single and Stefan Norman followed with a home run to right. That was all the Skyhawks could manage against Ginther, who scattered nine hits.

“Stefan, he came through and hits one out of the park,” Whitaker said. “(Ginther) was good. He changed speeds and hit his spots well. I liked him.”

It was Silverado’s fourth win over Coronado this season.

“I tell you what, they’re a good ballclub,” Whitaker said. “That’s four times, and that’s enough.”

• Green Valley 4, Las Vegas 1 — At Basic, Mark Johnson and Evan Kallas combined on a two-hitter as the Gators defeated the Wildcats (27-9) to move into the Sunrise championship game.

Johnson struck out six in six innings. Kyle Konicek, Tyler Jones and Matt Harrison each had a double for the Gators, who scored all four runs in the first inning.

• Las Vegas 6, Basic 1 — At Basic, Matt Schuette threw a complete game and Felix Segovia had two RBIs to help the Wildcats eliminate the Wolves (17-12).

• Coronado 15, Rancho 4 — At Eldorado, the Cougars scored 12 runs in the last three innings to eliminate the Rams (21-13).

Ben Morris, Gary Detwiler, Blanchard, Bryan and Arthur each had two hits for the Cougars.

SUNSET REGIONAL

• Bishop Gorman 8, Cimarron-Memorial 7 — At Centennial, Brandon Garcia was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs as the Gaels held off the Spartans (22-11) to move into the Sunset title game.

Gorman (31-6-1) plays Arbor View (22-9) at 7 p.m. today at Durango for the regional title and state tournament berth.

Johnny Filed was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Gorman, which led 7-2 after three innings.

Cimarron’s Zach Walters was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs.

• Arbor View 12, Sierra Vista 6 — At Durango, Dustin Hobbs was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs to help the Aggies eliminate the Lions (26-8) and reach the Sunset final.

Arbor View broke a 2-2 tie with a six-run fourth inning. Oscar Hudson was 3-for-4 with two runs for the Aggies, and Steven Hindle supplied two hits and three RBIs.

• Cimarron-Memorial 6, Spring Valley 5 — At Centennial, the Spartans scored twice in the fifth to pull ahead of the Grizzlies, who finished 18-16.

Keifer Williams homered for Cimarron in the fourth to tie the game at 4. Travis Feiner was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple for the Spartans.

Enzo Bello had a homer and two RBIs for Spring Valley.

CLASS 3A

• Pahrump Valley 8, Boulder City 5 — At Pahrump, Tyrell Smith threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and Austin Garza had a three-run double as the Trojans defeated the Eagles in the Class 3A Southern League Tournament.

Boulder City’s Josh Lewis hit a three-run home run.

• Faith Lutheran 8, Moapa Valley 4 — At Faith Lutheran, Chuck Buchanan struck out seven and Dave Anderson and Adam Jones tripled as the Crusaders beat Moapa Valley.
