Chaparral grad Seigler accused of pandering

An NFL linebacker who played football at Chaparral High School was arrested Thursday near Pittsburgh on pimping charges out of Las Vegas.

Richard Seigler, who was released from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad Thursday, is accused of pandering, living off the earnings of a prostitute and providing transportation for a prostitute.

Seigler became a suspect for Las Vegas police in an investigation that began in December into pandering of a juvenile.

A tipster told vice detectives that Seigler was working as a pimp and had at least two women working for him.

During a four-month investigation, detectives gathered “strong evidence” that Seigler was working as a pimp during the offseason, Las Vegas police Sgt. Gil Shannon said. Seigler had the women working in hotels and through an escort service, Shannon said.

A warrant was issued last week for Seigler’s arrest. The football player turned himself in to authorities in Allegheny, Pa., after learning about the warrant, Shannon said.

San Francisco drafted Seigler in the fourth round in 2004, and he played in seven games that season. The Steelers cut him in training camp last season, but he was added to the practice squad for the final two games of the season.

Also, running back Kevan Barlow signed a one-year contract with Pittsburgh and will take part in the team’s minicamp that starts today.

The New York Jets cut Barlow in February after he averaged 2.8 yards per carry on 131 attempts last season.

• TITANS — Cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones and his attorneys are to meet today with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell at an undisclosed New York location to appeal the length of Jones’ suspension for the 2007 season for conduct detrimental to the NFL.

Jones has been arrested five times and talked to police 10 times since being drafted in 2005 but has not been convicted in any cases.

The latest incident involves a fight and triple shooting at a Las Vegas strip club in February. Police have recommended charges against Jones for starting the fight and are investigating the shooting that left a man paralyzed.

Goodell will have a hearing Wednesday with Chicago defensive tackle Tank Johnson about his off-field problems. Johnson will be released from jail Sunday after serving 60 days of a 120-day sentence for violating parole in a 2005 case.

• RAVENS — Quarterback Steve McNair was charged in Nashville, Tenn., with driving under the influence even though police said his brother-in-law was behind the wheel of the pickup registered to the former Tennessee Titan.

Although McNair was a passenger, he was charged with a misdemeanor under a Tennessee law that prohibits a vehicle owner from letting someone who is inebriated drive it.

Police said officer Harold Taylor pulled over McNair’s 2003 Dodge pickup just before midnight Wednesday because it was speeding. The driver, Jamie Cartwright, 31, smelled of alcohol, failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath alcohol test.

• FALCONS — Cornerback Jason Webster was released.

He played in 33 games, including 29 starts, during three injury-plagued years in Atlanta, logging four interceptions and 178 tackles.
