HORSE RACING

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Miss Maisy – Ward has won every baby race except one by Chipman; sired by a turf horse, Ward drills speed into all of his babies.

To B. Devon – Ran well in debut and can be around to pick up the pieces; always thought Atkinson was a better than given credit for.

Long Shot – Freckesgrandact

Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Spoils of Excess – Did everything but win in a big debut effort 2-months ago; will have an easier time if he can start with the others.

Social Satire – Hasn’t run in over one year, but it was a decent debut effort; goes to new trainer, Sise, who can get them ready.

Long Shot – Set for Combat

Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

Swiss Lad – Speedy Mullins sort has proven he doesn’t need the lead to succeed; suspect Mullins barn is gearing up as we near Hollywood.

Debonair Joe – Dead late closer will need some help from some flash on the front end; gets big time class relief from stakes to claiming.

Long Shot – Celtic Fable

Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $27,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

Yodelen Dan – Sharp try in first ever race on grass; I liked him that day because of good races over Cushion track, a forgiving surface.

Prowling Cat – Logical chalk off a strong race down the hillside turf course; glad to see the Mig doing well and deciding to stay full-time.

Long Shot – Unusual Men

Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds

Coronado’s Way – First start in 10-months last time was an excellent tightener; Mullins stretches him out and he should be moving forward.

Archon Star – Makes his debut on dirt, but I suspect he’s in good condition from all his turf routes; if he dirts, he’ll be tough.

Long Shot – Can’t Stop Slew

Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Maemy – Ran a better than looked race last time out; I suspect she is rounding back into form and could produce a big effort today.

Watcher Knows – Turf Paradise shippers are usually tossed by most handicappers, not me; this filly is not outclassed facing these.

Long Shot – I’maladytak

Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $55,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Cantabria – Looked like a stakes horse on Cushion track, like a dud on dirt; Frankel puts her on turf where she should excel once again.

Ready to Talk – Pletcher has made a solid dent in SoCal with a small number of runners; filly is a useful sort who will earn lots of cash.

Long Shot – Categorize

Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds

El Gato Famoso – Logical chalk has proven he’s no steamroller, even in this limited class; tactical speed to sit a trip and grind it out.

Bodacat – Ever bet a jockey who always wins the last race and gets you out?; Chavez is becoming that for me, he rides hard all the time.

Long Shot – Oh I Tripped

Best Bet – Cantabria (race 7)

Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/7/$33.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals – 1,165/309/$2,061.40; Long Shots, 583/67/$916.00; Best Bets, 67/27/$112.40
