Henderson’s Painter impressive in PBA debut

Kerry Painter of Henderson made an impressive debut as a member of the Professional Bowlers Association by advancing to the top eight Tuesday in the PBA Senior Tour event at Manassas, Va.

The 54-year-old, who joined the PBA last week, was eliminated by eventual champion David Ozio 2-0 in the best-of-3 quarterfinals to win $1,700 in the tour’s season opener.

Ozio defeated Johnny Petraglia 258-232 for the title and $8,000.

Painter led 142 contestants after the opening round of qualifying and never dropped out of the top five.

The Senior Tour is scheduled to compete June 17 to 22 at the Suncoast.

• MACPHERSON CHASING RECORD — Henderson’s Wendy Macpherson can become the first woman to win four U.S. Bowling Congress Queens titles today in Matthews, N.C.

The winner of 20 professional women’s titles needs to win four matches during the televised single-elimination finals, which begin at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.

Fifth-seeded Macpherson faces Shannon O’Keefe of Rochester, N.Y., with the winner advancing to play Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J. Second-seeded Kristal Scott of Lawrence, Kan., meets the winner of the Macpherson-O’Keefe match. Top-seeded Diandra Asbaty of Chicago earned a spot in the championship match.

The Queens started with 344 players and the champion will receive $30,000.

• AMATEURS HEADED FOR ORLEANS — A field of 300 amateurs from across the country will begin competing at 9 a.m. today at The Orleans for two spots in the $250,000 Bowling Shootout.

Two amateurs will join top professionals Chris Barnes and Pete Weber in a frame-by-frame format that will pay $150,000 plus prizes worth up to $50,000.

The bowler with the highest pin-fall total each frame wins the money. If there is a tie, the money carries over to the next frame.

The made-for-TV event is scheduled to air at 11:30 a.m. May 20 on ESPN.
