HORSE RACING
April 25, 2007 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $14,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Run for Dessert – Big class drop for this favorite from top connections, Sherman and Talamo; will save ground inside and rally late.
Star Quality – Has been training forwardly since claimed by Pupye a while back; suspicious red flag drop, no different than the chalk.
Long Shot – Watcher Knows
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Forest Miss – Woke up in her second career start and has been held out since; like that Cerin hires Talamo who will win the riding title.
Worthy Cause – Logical chalk is stretching out for the first time and is strictly the one to beat; suspect can sit a stalking trip.
Long Shot – Alice Portlock
Race 3 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $35,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Red Opal – She’s run her better turf sprints at this shorter distance at Hollywood; Espinoza will sit in arrears and make one big run.
Spy Aly – Speedball may go unchallenged early, thus giving her a chance to steal this abbreviated sprint; plays catch me if you can.
Long Shot – Shaperelli
Race 4 – 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Blake’s Passion – A horse coming off a 10-month layoff may be a toss for many, but not for Frankel; should relish the Cushion track.
Tsetse Fly – Another taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; his last race showed hidden signs of life, look out.
Long Shot – Areutrue
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $51,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Seven Steps – Was part of a blanket finish last time and could have won with better luck; like the Mig taking over for the money shot.
Le Cirque – Tough DQ in a roughly run stretch; will be taken back by Espinoza and be part of a cavalry charge to the finish.
Long Shot – Storm Queen
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $31,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Natural Phenomenon – Sat a nice trip as the chalk in last, then surrendered in the final furlong; Canani hands the reins to Talamo.
Youhadyourchance – Speedy sort draws a perfect inside post to do his best work; get lots of value considering it’s a Sherman horse.
Long Shot – Primerica
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 10 feet), $100,000 Wilshire Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Double Trouble – Could be another budding Frankel superstar turf filly; she has been away 7-months and this may not be the ultimate goal.
Singalong – Dead late closer ran a clunker in last after a just miss try in the Buena Vista; she can upset this bunch with her best.
Long Shot – Polyfirst
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Lil Nugget – Ran last time like she needed the race, her first in 9-months; big trainer and rider change, expect more improvement.
Mudder of Pearl – Got a good test drive for Sherman in debut, now he’s adding Lasix on for start two; expect her to be a lot sharper.
Long Shot – Amenity
Best Bet – Blake’s Passion (race 4)
Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/7/$48.40; Long Shots, 10/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Final Totals – 1,416/374/$2,451.00; Long Shots, 705/76/$1,043.80; Best Bets, 81/32/$128.20
