Two killed, five injured when SUV crashes on I-15

Two people were killed and five others were injured when a Chevrolet Suburban rolled over Friday evening on Interstate 15, about 20 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Three people in the vehicle were critically injured, authorities said.

“Our preliminary investigation indicates this may have been caused by a tire blowout,” said trooper Kevin Honea, spokesman for the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The Suburban was heading south on I-15 just after 5 p.m. when it flipped over, Honea said.

Five people in the Suburban were ejected, Honea said. It was not immediately known whether they were wearing their seat belts, he said.

At least two people in the Suburban were wearing seat belts and had to be cut out of the vehicle by emergency workers, Honea said.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Three, including a girl, were transported to University Medical Center by helicopter with critical injuries, Honea said. The remaining two were taken to UMC by ambulance, he said.

Southbound traffic on I-15 was slowed by the crash. Troopers created a lane for vehicles on the paved shoulder of the highway.

Honea said he didn’t immediately know the identities of the victims or where they were from, but the Suburban had California license plates.

There were no signs that alcohol or drug use caused the crash, Honea said.

This is the second crash in a week’s time in Southern Nevada to leave multiple people dead.

A woman and four children were killed in a collision at Farm Road and Tenaya Way on May 5, when a man alleged to be a drunken driver sped through a stop sign and slammed into their SUV.
