On auction block:167.5 BLM acres

The Bureau of Land Management is holding its next public land auction Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.

A total of 167.5 acres in parcels will be available for sale under the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act of 1998. The previous auction in March resulted in four parcels totaling 25 acres being sold for nearly $12.5 million, or roughly $500,000 an acre.

Fewer than 100 people attended that auction, which was held at the BLM’s Las Vegas field office. Past auctions have packed up to 2,000 people into venues such as Sam’s Town Live and 500 into the Cashman Center Theater and the Clark County Government Center.

Recent auctions have been restricted to smaller parcels, ranging from 2.5 acres to 10 acres, compared with earlier sales that encompassed thousands of acres.

Five percent of revenue from the sale goes to the Nevada State General Education Fund and 10 percent goes to the Southern Nevada Water Authority. The remaining 85 percent is held in a special account used to fund projects throughout the state.

The BLM is seeking nominations through Dec. 20 for the next round of projects. Nominations should be submitted to the Bureau of Land Management, Las Vegas Field Office, SNPLMA Division, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130.

Project categories include environmentally sensitive land acquisition; capital improvements for parks, trails and natural areas; conservation initiatives; and the Eastern Nevada Landscape Restoration Project.
