UNLV men’s golfers in sixth at Preview

The UNLV men’s golf team was in sixth place after the first two rounds of play Saturday in the PING/Golfweek Preview at Purdue’s Kampen Course in West Lafayete, Ind.

The Rebels shot 5-over-par 293 in the first round and 8-over 296 in the second for a 13-over 589 total. Oklahoma State shot 3-under 573 to take the lead, with Charlotte second at 576.

Freshman Ji Moon led UNLV at 1-over 145, tied for eighth individually. Charlotte’s Jonas Enander Hedin led at 4-under 140.

The tournament’s final round is today.

Also: Daniel Cruz scored in the 50th minute, and the UNLV men’s soccer team held on to beat Missouri State 1-0 at Johann Memorial Field.

Cruz scored off an assist from Lamar Neagle. Calvin Bailey made three saves for the Rebels (3-3-2).

Louisville freshman basketball player Clarence Holloway had open-heart surgery to repair a wall of his aorta and his aortic valve.

Holloway, a 7-foot-1-inch center from Chicago, underwent the surgery at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky., after a physical Friday found the heart condition, university officials said.

Holloway is enrolled at Louisville but has not been working out with the Cardinals while he awaits initial eligibility approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse. He will be sidelined the entire 2007-08 season, but doctors said he will be able to return to the court.

Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta got a raise of almost $500,000, boosting his salary to just under $2.5 million a year, and the school added a year to his contract to extend it through the 2016 season.

PRO BASKETBALL

Point guard Harris inks extension with Mavs

The Dallas Mavericks signed Devin Harris to the five-year agreement they reached this month.

The extension is worth about $42 million and locks up the speedy point guard through the 2012-13 season. He would have been entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Harris averaged career highs across the board last season, including 10.2 points and 3.7 assists, as the Mavericks won an NBA-best 67 games.

The Mavericks obtained Harris in a trade with the Washington Wizards on draft day in 2004.

Also: Forward Michael Ruffin signed with the Milwaukee Bucks after playing the last three seasons with the Washington Wizards.

Ruffin, a 30-year-old free agent, has spent seven years in the NBA. He also has played for the Utah Jazz and was drafted in the second round by Chicago in 1999.

MISCELLANEOUS

Record-holder Powell wins 100-meter title

Asafa Powell ran the third fastest 100-meter dash of the year, and it came after two false starts by the competition.

The Jamaican won in 9.83 seconds at the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany. Despite a strong headwind, he came within 0.09 seconds of his world record.

Without world champion Tyson Gay in the field, Powell stayed calm as false starts frazzled the opposition. Once out of the blocks, he ran relaxed and blew away his rivals.

Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Norway was second in 10.06, and Michael Frater of Jamaica was third in 10.11.

Also: Denis Menchov of Russia moved closer to his second Spanish Vuelta title in three years, and Samuel Sanchez of Spain won the 20th stage in Villalba, Spain.

Menchov finished second, 12 seconds behind Sanchez, who completed the 15.5-mile time trial around Villalba in 22 minutes, 11 seconds to get his second straight stage victory.

Menchov stretched his lead over Carlos Sastre to 3 minutes, 31 seconds, with an overall time of 78:21.40.

The race concludes today.
