HORSE RACING

OAK TREE AT SANTA ANITA

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

Wineshine – Baffert colt ran well at Fairplex after graduating against tougher at Del Mar; we’ll be in the mix throughout.

Rudeameanie – Logical chalk facing a very slow looking group; hard to believe that Nakatani does not have a BC mount.

Long Shot – Bev’s Ex

Race 2 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse 435,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Silber – Maybe she’ll finally get the hang of finishing after winning a head bob in last; facing an uninspiring group.

Abbey Cat – Sight unseen for 2-months since Del Mar grass; she’s a grinder who may find no one in her way late.

Long Shot – Feel Ridge

Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $26,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 2-year-olds

Rivergrade Boy – Draw a line thru the last place Norfolk and his resume doesn’t look so bad; tactical speed to sit a trip.

Tough Contender – Ran terribly off the claim for Knapp; his maiden claiming win at Fairplex was good, needs to repeat that.

Long Shot – County Tune

Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $60,000 Pinjara, 2-year-olds

Southwest – Exits a good looking turf MSW win; lots of unknown in here, but he can repeat his last race, he’ll be tough.

Trickster Nickster – Sharp speedball win at Fairplex; suspect he’ll be the pacesetter today, they can’t leave him alone.

Long Shot – Yes It’s a Cat

Race 5 – 7 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Press Release – Solid favorite is taking a huge class drop to face slowpokes; adding blinkers on, he is the one to beat.

Big Ed – Like the turn back in distance from a 2-turn route for this elongated sprint; his 5-of-8 in the money looks good.

Long Shot – Ilikeitalot

Race 6 – 7 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Irish Express – Class drop will help her compete in this nondescript group; not sure why they carded 10 races like this.

Crazy Girl – Baffert cull has a for sale sign, cheap, hanging from her withers; she may win this by inheriting the lead.

Long Shot – Hotitude

Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $43,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Jane Doe – Ran poorly last time after a decent looking debut; she could bounce back at a square price in here.

Belleacton – FTS from Drysdale figures to get a ton of betting by reputation alone; that and the others don’t look so hot.

Long Shot – Floral Reflections

Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $47,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

Turnbolt – Underachiever runs first time for a claiming price; Mandella cull has not lived up to higher expectations.

Midwesterner – Claimed by Mitchell, would not be shocked if he shows major improvement tonight; watch the tote for clues.

Long Shot – Monterey Jazz

Race 9 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $60,000 Hidden Light, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Ididntmeantoo – Speedball has the pedigree to last going around 2-turns; the rail is out 8 feet, that will help her.

Shes a Lucky Wager – Favorite is a dead late closer who can save lots of ground from the rail; Nakatani can have a big day.

Long Shot – La Mina

Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $80,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Harlan’s Song – Draw a line thru her last miserable race, and she looks much better; tactical speed to get involved early.

Catch Candy – Tepid chalk is taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; need not be much with these.

Long Shot – Love Happens

Best Bet – Press Release (race 5)

Santa Anita Thursday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$36.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.20

Santa Anita Totals – 391/83/$607.20; Long Shots, 195/29/$389.80; Best Bets, 23/6/$30.20
