Gorman boys top Reno in triple overtime

The Bishop Gorman and Reno boys basketball teams stood toe to toe, and neither team flinched.

The Gaels would come with a big right hook, the Huskies would jab right back.

When the final second ticked off in Gorman’s 88-87 triple-overtime win Friday in the Bishop Gorman Holiday Classic, both teams were left satisfied — and exhausted.

“We’re in Las Vegas, and it was kinda like — I don’t want to say a heavyweight fight — more like a middleweight fight,” Gorman coach Grant Rice said. “I don’t think we’re quite to the heavyweight level yet, where we want to be. But it went the distance, that’s for sure.”

The Gaels went up for good in a back-and-forth third overtime when Kylel Coleman hit one of two free throws with less than 30 seconds left. Finally, when Reno guard Austin Morgan’s 17-foot jumper bounced off the back of the rim, the dust settled in the slugfest, which was a rematch of a 2006 state semifinal contest.

Early in the game, the Gaels (10-0) looked like they’d cruise on their home court. But the Huskies continued to fight.

“Gorman is such a good team, they’re so quick, they make you play so fast and you have to do so many things different than you’re used to doing,” Reno coach Kyle Schellin said. “It’s tough to get back to doing what we want to do.”

When the Huskies went inside to center Olek Czyz, he made it count. The Duke recruit had 35 points, and Morgan added 22 points.

Quintin Dailey had 22 points, Czar Robotham scored 21 and Coleman added 15 for the Gaels.

With the win, Gorman advanced to the tournament finals to face Bishop O’Connell (Va.) at 6:30 tonight. O’Connell advanced with a 61-38 win over Snow Canyon (Utah) on Friday.

Thunder Ridge (Colo.) 70, Foothill 60 — At Gorman, Evan Roquemore’s 14 points were not enough for the Falcons.
