BASIC

Coach: Tino Diaz

2006 record: 4-11-5

Top players: M Shane Allison, Jr.; M Daniel Bowman, Sr.; D Christian Cisneros, Jr.; GK Chris Garcia, Sr.; M Justin Sillitoe, Sr.; M Roberto Valdez, Sr.

Outlook: Last year’s team was tied for a playoff berth before injuries and ineligibility took their toll. Diaz thinks this squad has the ability and the confidence to get there this season, which would be Basic’s first trip to the postseason in more than 30 years. Garcia is one of the best goalkeepers in the city.

DEL SOL

Coach: John Britt

2006 record: 6-6-5

Top players: D Chris Beil, Sr.; D Juan Contreras, Sr.; M Damien Lujan, Sr.; M Angel Favila, Sr.

Outlook: With 11 seniors, Del Sol could surprise in 2007, as most of the teams ahead of it in the division were hit hard by graduation. A playoff spot is likely.

FOOTHILL

Coach: Adam Canfield

2006 record: 2-17-2

Top players: D Nick Beatty, Sr.; D Cruz Cortez, Fr.; M Drew Suits, Jr.; F Christian Volsky, Fr.

Outlook: The Falcons skew young with a nice group of freshmen coming into the program, including Cortez and Volsky, who will be asked to contribute to the varsity right away. Canfield hopes for a return to the playoffs, but that might be asking a little much from an inexperienced team coming off of a two-win season.

GREEN VALLEY

Coach: Roy Snyder

2006 record: 16-2-2

Top players: GK/M Ryan Barazza, Sr.; M Sean Henderson, Sr.; M Rodrigo Medina, Jr.; M Brendan Regan, Sr.; D Ben Shields, Sr.; M Tim Shue, So.

Outlook: Despite losing All-Southern Nevada players James Bindrup and Eric Barto to graduation, expectations are high for Green Valley. Snyder said though the Gators have a number of highly talented returning seniors, the fate of team could be determined how the JV players from last year perform at the varsity level.

LIBERTY

Coach: Scott Tenenbaum

2006 record: 1-17-1

Top players: M Haziel Gonzalez, Sr.; M Alex Mata, Sr.; GK Brad Armendirez, Sr., D Jonathan Key, Sr.

Outlook: Tenenbaum’s first season was extremely rough, but the coach is optimistic for 2007. He thinks a playoff run could be in the mix, though that may be optimistic for a team that one only one game a year ago.

SILVERADO

Coach: John Cwik

2006 record: 15-4-3

Top players: GK Joey Mora, Sr.; F Esau Salazar, Sr.; S Omar Sanchez, Sr.

Outlook: Silverado, last season’s state runner-up to Bishop Gorman, will look to regroup after losing six valuable contributors to graduation, including standout Rick Abrego. The Skyhawks also are dealing with some academic issues that could leave them with a thin roster. Still, all is not lost. Coach Cwik returns a fine stable of defensive players who should form the foundation of this year’s team. Despite all the losses, there should be enough talent left behind to make another run at the postseason.

TECH

Coach: Josh Jones

2006 record: 15-2-4

Top players: M Ramiro Baldivias, Sr.; D German Rubio Sr.; M Bryan Jimenez, Sr.; D Jose Soto, Sr.

Outlook: The Roadrunners lost two outstanding performers in Tony Herrera and Julio Garcia but return a very experienced team, which should make them contenders. Baldivias, who netted 18 goals last season, will again be counted on to lead the offensive attack.

NORTHEAST DIVISION

CANYON SPRINGS

Coach: Lloyd Bunn

2006 record: 5-9-1

Top players: Not available

Outlook: First-year coach Bunn was a late hire, so the Pioneers may get off to a slow start.

CHAPARRAL

Coach: Trevor Roberts

2006 record: 3-9-3

Top players: D Oscar Moller, Sr.; M Mike Mota, Sr.; GK Luis Vidal, Sr.

Outlook: Chaparral, coming off a disappointing 2006 campaign, has looked much better in practice this season, Roberts said. He has six returning starters, a group he hopes will help him revamp the program. A playoff berth is not out of the question.

DESERT PINES

Coach: Andrew Franklin

2006 record: 0-13-2

Top players: F Ernesto Corona, Sr.; D Ryan Escalera, Jr.

Outlook: The Jaguars, who were forced to play freshmen last season just to fill out the roster, have eight returning starters, including Corona and Escalera. Coming off a tough season, Desert Pines would love to be more competitive and notch a few wins.

ELDORADO

Coach: Gerald Pentsil

2006 record: 13-6-3

Top players: F Rene Ardon, Jr.; D Jacob Justice, Sr.; M Jonathan Lopez, Sr.

Outlook: Hopes are high at Eldorado, which is looking to improve on last year’s run into the second round of the playoffs. Three seniors are gone from a year ago, including All-Southern Nevada performer Alpinar Rivera. But Pentsil believes he has some capable sophomores to pick up some of the slack. If he is right, the Sundevils could be a legitimate contender.

LAS VEGAS

Coach: Vince Hart

2006 record: 16-4-2

Top players: M Jose Camacho, Sr.; D Chris Millette, Jr.; F Joaquin Rivas, So.; D Ricardo Salazar, Jr.; M Jaime Toscano, Jr.

Outlook: The Wildcats were hit hard by graduation, losing eight starters off last year’s team, which made it to the state semifinals. They don’t have much depth remaining and may struggle at times this year. Look for Jaime Toscano, an All-Southern Nevada midfielder whom Hart calls one of the best players he has seen in the last 30 years, to keep Las Vegas in a lot of games all by himself.

RANCHO

Coach: Kamilah Bywaters

2006 record: 9-5-4

Top players: Julio Abrica, Sr.; Mauro Diaz, Sr.; Max Vargas, Jr.

Outlook: The Rams will have a very experienced team, returning eight players from last season. Bywaters likes the individual skill level of the team, saying they move the ball with pace and have a great deal of passion for the game. Rancho could compete for the division title.

VALLEY

Coach: Frank D’Amelio

2006 record: 7-8-4

Top players: GK Pedro Arias, Fr.; F Joey Lopez, So.; Jeremy Meduvski, Sr.

Outlook: Valley was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs last season but has eight returning players with hopes of going further this time. Still, the Vikings are relatively young and lacking leadership with only three seniors.

SUNSET REGION

SOUTHWEST DIVISION

BISHOP GORMAN

Coaches: Nick Arbelaez and Victor Arbelaez

2006 record: 15-1-1

Top players: M Steven Azena, Sr.; M Cody Barnett, Jr.; F Austin Cain, So.; M Nic Eary, Jr.; M John Vaccaro, Jr.

Outlook: Bishop Gorman, as always, will be loaded, with 16 players returning from a squad that won the state championship. Nick Arbeleaz will share the coaching duties with his father, Victor, who sat out last season while recovering from cancer treatment. Though Nick said the Gaels might not be as deep as in past years, they remain clear-cut favorites to win the region and have a great chance to repeat as state champions.

BONANZA

Coach: Andrew Sherer

2006 record: 12-4-2

Top players: Not available

Outlook: Bonanza lost a lot of talent from last season and now faces a difficult challenge of rebuilding under Sherer, who is in first year with the Bengals. The new coach feels good about his team, saying he has some talented young players who are ready to compete. Still, matching last year’s record will be a challenge.

CLARK

Coach: Michael Sarabyn

2006 record: 11-5-4

Top players: M Howard Morales, Sr.; Angelo Soro, Jr.

Outlook: Clark, led by four-year starter Morales, hopes to rebound after finishing a point out of the playoffs last season. The fate of the Chargers, whose JV team went undefeated last year, will depend on how their young players adjust to the higher level of competition. This could be a dark-horse team in the region.

DURANGO

Coach: Barry Forget

2006 record: 1-13-1

Top players: Not available

Outlook: After being a regular in the playoffs, Durango struggled mightily last season. Getting back on track has to be the goal.

SIERRA VISTA

Coach: Ryan Quinn

2006 record: 7-11-1

Top players: D Colin Defalco, So.; M Christian Djordjevic, Jr.; GK Andrew Fontein, Sr.; Luis Monarrez, Sr.; F Andres Padilla-Cruz, Sr.; M Igor Pavlovic, Sr.

Outlook: Losing Irvin Abrego is a blow to the offense, but with goalie Fontein, a national pool player, Sierra Vista will be in almost every game. After winning just three games in 2005, the Lions are making great strides and should compete for a spot in the postseason.

SPRING VALLEY

Coach: Bill Hamilton

2006 record: 6-8-3

Top players: M Bryan Scott, Sr.; M Jason Mazzeo, Sr.

Outlook: Spring Valley looks to become a factor this season, returning seven starters. Mazzeo, a three-year starter who was named All-Southern Nevada last year, certainly is a good foundation from which to start.

NORTHWEST DIVISION

ARBOR VIEW

Coach: Roger Brown

2006 record: 4-14-2

Top players: F Josh Lopez, Sr.; M Michael Cable, Sr.

Outlook: Brown inherits a tough situation from former coach Rick Kazee, who was placed on paid leave last week and is being investigated by the district after he was named in a civil lawsuit by a former student who claimed he sexually abused her.

CENTENNIAL

Coach: Tommy Porrello

2006 record: 15-2-3

Top players: D Mike Farbridge-Curry, Sr.; GK Chey McDonald, Sr.; M Joe Mikulich, Jr.

Outlook: Centennial brings back seven starters and 12 players from last year’s roster but must replace its top three goal scorers (two moved, and the other graduated). A program that has become accustomed to being among the best in town now must rely on hard work and determination to remain there.

CHEYENNE

Coach: Jennifer Cann

2006 record: 11-8-1

Top players: F Frank Barnes, Sr.; M Bernardo Barajas, Sr.; GK Julio Garza, Sr.; M Daniel Sanchez, So.

Outlook: Cheyenne should be looking at a playoff berth with 11 returning players, including seven seniors. In order for that to happen, however, Cann said the key is getting some valuable contributions from some newcomers who played JV last season.

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL

Coach: Debbie Hunt

2006 record: 12-3-5

Top players: D B.J. Carrera, Sr.; F Chad Rigler, Sr.

Outlook: The Spartans lost six seniors, including five starters, from last year’s club. But there is still a good foundation, and they should be able to regroup well enough to make the playoffs.

MOJAVE

Coach: John Carlton

2006 record: 4-13

Top players: Not available

Outlook: Carlton is the first coach to guide the program for two consecutive years since 2002, something he thinks will help develop some much-needed continuity. The Rattlers return six players, two seniors and four juniors. Carlton thinks a playoff berth is a realistic goal.

PALO VERDE

Coach: Kevin Hagood

2006 record: 15-4-2

Top players: M Cameron Davis, Sr.; GK Erik Garcia, Sr.; M Griffin Green, Sr.; F Vincent Lara, Sr.; D Eric Leavell, Sr.; M Steven Wilding, Sr.; D Jared Wolffis, Sr.

Outlook: Palo Verde appears to be in a rebuilding mode. The Panthers will have to rely on an influx of young talent from the JV if they wish to experience anything close to the success of last season.

SHADOW RIDGE

Coach: Yancey Tisdale

2006 record: 4-11-2

Top players: M Alex Banuelos, Sr.; M Yuber Franco, Sr.; F Max Garcia, Jr.

Outlook: Tisdale, who is in his first year, will try to breathe new life into a program that struggled last season. He said they have good teamwork and feel confident coming into the season. Returning 13 players, including nine seniors, Shadow Ridge could be a surprise team.
