Spanish Trail nears finish of $15 million renovation

Spanish Trail Golf and Country Club is still a couple of years from its 25th anniversary, but the celebration has already begun.
The 27-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed layout and clubhouse are in the midst of a $15 million renovation, but general manager Dominic Guzzo said the project will not alter the course’s personality.
“We’re trying to protect the integrity of the design while at the same time putting in the necessary upgrades,” Guzzo said. “We didn’t want to make wholesale changes. Rather we were looking to modify and adjust what we have.”
The Sunrise and Lakes courses have already been upgraded. The nine-hole Canyon Course is under renovation, with April 1 as the targeted re-opening date. The clubhouse had its grand re-opening party Sunday.
“This is being done for the benefit of our members,” Guzzo said. “When it’s done, the members will have something they can be very proud of.”
Spanish Trail has 640 golf-playing members. The club opened in 1984, and major work also was performed on the courses in 1995.
• 60TH ANNIVERSARY — While the Las Vegas Golf Club celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, the Las Vegas Women’s Golf Association is also celebrating its 60th year.
According to president Joan Marcotte, the LVWGA is the oldest women’s golf group in the city, dating to 1947. It has played at Las Vegas Golf Club the entire time, has 104 members and plays a weekly tournament every Tuesday.
“We’re the oldest and longest running,” Marcotte said.
• CLARK COUNTY AMATEUR — The final event of the Southern Nevada Golf Association season, the Clark County Amateur, is this weekend at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The championship division will play Saturday and Sunday with the seniors division playing Thursday and Friday.
Joe Sawaia won the championship division last year, and Steven Hakes is the defending seniors champion.
