Rebels ranked 25th in volleyball poll
For the first time in the program’s history, the UNLV volleyball team was ranked, checking in at No. 25 Monday in the CSTV/AVCA Division I coaches poll.
UNLV (19-3) is tied for first in the Mountain West Conference with No. 18 Colorado State. Both are 10-2 in league play.
The Rebels have two home games this week, meeting New Mexico on Friday and Texas Christian on Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m. at Cox Pavilion.
Also: UNLV wide receiver Aaron Straiten was suspended for Saturday’s home game against San Diego State for breaking team rules.
This is Straiten’s second suspension this season. He has started seven games, catching 23 passes for 285 yards.
UNLV football coach Mike Sanford will be an assistant to Oregon State’s Mike Riley in the Hula Bowl on Jan. 12.
The UNLV women’s soccer team earned two Mountain West Conference honors, with Katie Carney named co-Player of the Week and Alicia Lugo named Defensive Player of the Week.
Carney had the lone goal in UNLV’s 1-0, double-overtime upset of No. 24 Brigham Young on Friday. Lugo had 10 saves en route to her 10th shutout of the season in goal.
UNLV men’s soccer player Nicholas Paterson was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Week and was named to College Soccer News’ Team of the Week.
Paterson had the lone goal in a 1-0, double-OT upset of No. 21 New Mexico on Saturday.
The UNLV men’s golf team shot 15-under 273 to stand tied for sixth after one round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Kahuku, Hawaii.
Tennessee led at 24-under 264, with Robin Wingardh in the individual lead at 9-under 63. Seung-su Han led the Rebels with a 65, tied for fourth.
The UNLV women’s golf team, paced by individual leader Alejandra Guacaneme, was tied for second after two rounds of the USF Invitational in San Francisco.
Guacaneme was at 1-over 143, with teammate Therese Koelbaek tied for second at 146. UNLV had a 39-over 607 total, tied with UC Davis and one shot behind Texas Tech.

Yallop quits as coach of MLS’s L.A. Galaxy
Frank Yallop quit the Los Angeles Galaxy after coaching David Beckham this season, and he’ll return to San Jose for a second stint in charge of the Earthquakes.
The Galaxy will receive San Jose’s third-round pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft as compensation.
Beckham broke the news of Yallop’s departure Sunday night, saying the coach informed the team after the Galaxy’s charity game to benefit victims of Southern California’s recent wildfires. The team confirmed Yallop’s resignation Monday.
Also: Former U.S. national coach Bruce Arena resigned as New York Red Bulls coach and sporting director, two days after the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year.
New Zealand-bred Efficient beat Purple Moon by three-quarters of a length today in the $4.6 million Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest and most prestigious horse race.
Centennial’s Johnna Brown had 17 kills, 11 digs and two blocks to lead the Bulldogs to a 26-24, 28-26, 26-24 victory over Coronado to earn the final berth in this week’s Class 4A state girls volleyball tournament.
Lauren Sagers added 10 kills, 16 assists and 11 digs for Centennial, which plays Sunrise Region champion Silverado at 3:40 p.m. Friday at Silverado. Sunset champ Durango plays Northern champ Reno in the other Class 4A semifinal at 5:20 p.m.
