Firefighters extinguish several small fires on Fourth of July

Las Vegas Fire Department firefighters put out a handful of fires on the Fourth of July, but by about 10 p.m. hadn’t had any major incidents.

“There was nothing too serious, but this (between 9 p.m. and midnight) is the time when things start picking up,” said Tim Szymanski, public information officer for the Fire Department.

Since early Wednesday, the Fire Department responded to about a half-dozen calls for people suffering from heat-related problems, but none was serious enough to require transportation to the hospital.

The official high temperature for Las Vegas, recorded at McCarran International Airport, was 114 degrees on Wednesday.

At about 1:45 p.m., authorities took a man to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation after a mattress caught fire at the Sunrise Vista Suites at 3801 Charleston Boulevard, near Pecos Road. Authorities believed a cigarette might have ignited the mattress.

Firefighters put out a small brush fire on Lone Mountain Road at about 1:25 p.m. No buildings were in the area.

About 8:45 p.m., a small shed on the 2200 block of Fair Avenue, near Rancho Drive and Washington Avenue, caught fire but the blaze was quickly put out, the Fire Department reported.
