Lady Rebels stumble at BYU

Sequoia Holmes led the UNLV women’s basketball team with 14 points but was forced to the bench because of foul trouble during a decisive stretch of the second half in the Lady Rebels’ 67-55 loss to Brigham Young on Wednesday in Provo, Utah.

Holmes’ layup pulled UNLV (6-10, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) within 30-27 to begin the second half. But she was whistled for her fourth foul moments later, and the Cougars (8-6, 2-0) took control with an 18-8 run as Holmes sat out the next 10 minutes.

UNLV, after trailing by 21 points, got within 59-50 on Shamela Hampton’s jumper with 1:31 left.

BYU hit eight of nine free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win.

Mallary Carling led the Cougars with a season-high 26 points.
