Mexican duo lead SCORE race

Gus Vildosola Jr. and father Gus Sr. of Mexicali, Mexico, had the overall lead Saturday after the first day of competition in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.

The Vildosolas turned eight laps on the 6.25-mile desert circuit in 1 hour, 16 seconds (49.778 mph), with Arizona driver Rich Ronco second at 1:01:00. Both entrants are in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division.

Las Vegan Pat Dean was the top local, leading Class 1 and in fourth overall at 1:02:27, followed by fellow Las Vegans and Class 1 contestants B.J. Richardson and John Gaughan in fifth overall.

Three more local entrants were among the top 10 overall, all driving in the Trophy-Truck division: Kory Scheeler and Mike Costello were seventh at 1:02:34; Bobby Baldwin was eighth at 1:02:49; and B.J. Baldwin was ninth at 1:03:01.

In the SCORE Lite division, Las Vegan Rob MacCachren teamed with Californian Tom Watson to take the lead, covering 43.75 miles in 59:17 (44.278 mph).
